Happy Chinese New Year! wonder | wander | world welcomes the Yang Fire Monkey this 2016!

The Chinese Lunar New Year always begins on the second new moon after the winter 

solstice. 

Depending on which part of the world you are, for 2016 this coincides with the Aquarius 

New Moon which occurs on the 8th or 9th of February 2016 at 6:39 a.m. PST, 9:39 a.m. 

EST, and 1:39 p.m. GMT. 

Imbolc or Candlemas starts on Groundhog Day or what old myths call Persephone - 

with the awakening of Earth's life force as light returns out of winter's depths. 

We are two months into the new year, but those who follow Chinese astrology still have 

time to plot their direction and decisions for 2016, as the Chinese community and the 

rest of the world usher in the Year of the Fire Monkey (CNN Philippines). 

To celebrate the arrival of the Chinese New Year in the East Coast, a flash mob featuring 

a hundred performers in monkey costumes plan to make an appearance at New York City's 

Times Square.

At 1:30 p.m. on Feb 6, as crowds gather in the famed square to celebrate the arrival of the 

Chinese New Year, the Monkey King, the main character in the Chinese classical novel 

Journey to the West, will appear with his "children" as part of a flash mob. 

Staging a performance that has borrowed heavily from classical Peking Opera, a form of 

traditional Chinese theater that has been both enjoyed and revered by Chinese audiences for more than two centuries.
