A friend from our tropical home was here visiting for a few days from the UK. Being water babies we were both happy as clams on the East River Ferry - off to traipse through Williamsburg and Dumbo in Brooklyn.
Brooklyn is one of the five boroughs of New York City. It used to be and still feels much like a full fledged
city with approximately 2.5 million inhabitants. If separated from the rest of
NYC, Brooklyn would be the fourth most populous American city.
Brooklyn is currently enjoying a period of expansion
and affluence not experienced since before World War II.
It is now a
world renowned entertainment center with a new arts district that includes a new art
museum and the highly controversial Frank Gehry designed sports arena for the
NBA's Nets.
Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed Brooklyn's
Prospect Park as well as Manhattan's Central Park, thought his Brooklyn
creation the finer of the two.
Elsewhere in the borough, Williamsburg is a hipster
neighborhood and burgeoning art colony, and Brighton Beach is home to New
York's largest concentration of Russian immigrants.
DUMBO is an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Once popular with artists for loft space, it has now
become popular with a richer, trendier crowd.
